Gianfranco Rosi’s lyrical documentary examines the lives of local and immigrants alike on the frontline of Fortress Europe: the island of Lampedusa. Here, twelve-year old Samuele dodges school and plays with his friends. Yet his home has become the destination of men, women and children trying to make the crossing from Africa in flimsy boats. Fire at Sea won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 2017 and it has been nominated for Best Documentary at the 89th Academy Awards.
Italian with English subtitles.
